Jacquesâs lips were on mine, and as first kisses went, it was pure magic. Maybe it was the time of year, maybe it was the months of waiting, or maybe it was simply the pairing of two people who loved each other despite all odds, but this kiss would stay in my memory bank until my last breath.
The jingle of the bells above the door behind us had my brain returning from where it was floating in the dark sky. I pulled back, putting just an inch between Jacques and me, his strong arms around my waist, not at all feeling like he was ready to let me go.
âI have wanted to do that for months, my sweet Pamela,â he said quietly, the ache in his voice a reflection of the one Iâd had in my chest, waiting for him to make a move.
I gave him a cheeky grin, spawned from the giddiness that was threatening to take over intelligent conversation. âAnd Iâve been waiting months for you to do just that.â
Jacques smiled back at me, the dimple in his left cheek coming out like it always did when he was very happy. His hand came up to cup my cheek. The rough calluses from the work he did for the winery scraped gently across my skin.
âI think I could wait years for you, Pamela.â
I frowned, the details of the night coming back to me. The punch of guilt hit my gut, knowing Iâd sealed his fate because of my ridiculous technology skills. âBut I donât want to wait years! Iâm so sorry, Jacques. How do I fix this?â
Jacques remained calm. How, I didnât know. My stomach was churning at the injustice of it all. He just smiled at me, as if he wasnât aware that all of this would come to a screeching halt when he had to leave the country.
âJacques!â I poked him in the ribs. âAre you kiss drunk? Youâll have to leave! What can we do?â
He laughed, which made me more furious. Not at him, of course, but just at the situation Iâd put us in. âYes, one could say that. Your kisses are more powerful than your wine, Pamela.â He leaned down and kissed me again. Quickly this time, not giving me nearly enough time to enjoy it. âIâve had more time to process this. You will get there too. We will go to the winery tomorrow and get things settled for my absence. And then I will go.â
When I made a noise, he quickly added, âBut I will be back. Donât worry. It may take some time to sort things out, but we have already proven we can wait for each other, no?â
I felt my bottom lip trembling. âBut I donât want to wait.â
âYou are cute when youâre throwing a tantrum, my sweet.â Jacques ghosted a kiss across my lips, ending my pout. âLetâs get some rest and then we will sort everything out tomorrow.â
I inhaled as deeply as I could, the scents of hot chocolate, pine trees, and something sweet hitting my nostrils.
